As it happened with Mercury’s retrograde station a few days ago, Saturn is leaving his mark all over the upcoming Sagittarius’ New Moon (arriving on December 18, 26°31, 6:30 PM UTC), right before he leaves the sign of the archer to come home to Capricorn.
A New Moon in itself is an energetic doorway that allows us to break ground for new cycles from within, a time for spiritual and emotional reboot. A moment for envisioning, seeding, incubating, setting intentions, a fresh start. Even more so when happening around the Winter Solstice, with the year coming to a close, and a new one right around the corner.
With its adventurous fervor and unwavering optimism, the sign of Sagittarius matches this euphoric, temerarious energy. Wild and restless, Sagittarius craves the euphoria of wide open spaces where to roam, either in a literal or metaphorical sense. The glyph for this sign pictures an arrow pointing skyward while lifting up a cross; it’s the Higher Mind that spiritualizes the matter, in search of a perfect integration of worldly action and noble aims. The centaur of the Zodiac comes alive when galloping towards a higher aspiration, transcending the grey walls of mundane existence, keeping sight of the “Big Picture” with its fiery arrows aimed at its goals. Thus, Sagittarius symbolizes sense of purpose, progress, and high-reaching vision. A vision carved from the raw material of our ideals, principles and beliefs. A fire that beckons, inspires, sustains. The fire that burns within us all and spurs our leaps of faith.
Under a New Moon in Sagittarius, we firmly set our eyes (and our arrows) on that guiding light. We soak up the necessary inspiration and motivation to step out of our comfort zone, and into the future (the New Moon also receives a supportive, invigorating trine from rebellious Uranus, currently Retrograde). We embrace the new discoveries that can propel our expansion into uncharted territory (as Uranus would have it).
However, the cautionary influence of Saturn makes itself known, restraining the boundless inflation of Sagittarius in order to gift us with a laser-beam focus on our priorities, our utmost goals, and the work that needs to be done in order to anchor them in the physical realm.
After Saturn’s passage through Sagittarius, we are less naïve about our dreams and visions, less impotent in the face of their might, and, at the same time, less egotistically attached to the success of our pursuit. We no longer dissipate our energies indiscriminately. We’re no longer falling prey to our own delusions of grandeur. We are as aware of our vision as we are about the reality we’re operating in. Saturn’s goodbye kiss to Sagittarius in the form of this New Moon is an invitation to step up our ethics, dreams, ideals and back them up with facts. To choose our direction carefully, and move steadily. To never lose sight of our destination, yet to also enjoy the journey and allow it to transform us into emotionally mature beings with a sharp sense of integrity.
